On December 10th, Human Rights Day, we held a community dialogue at the Glen View Community Hall to conclude our 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence commemorations. This event served to reflect on the campaign and engage the community in meaningful conversations about ending violence against women and girls.
The dialogue focused on raising awareness about gender-based violence (GBV), its various forms, and its impact on girls within our community. We shared feedback gathered from girls during our recent camp, highlighting their experiences and challenges related to GBV. Parents and guardians were educated on what constitutes gender-based violence and how these forms of violence affect the well-being and development of their daughters. The discussion was open, honest, and aimed at deepening understanding and collective responsibility.
We were honored to have representatives from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Public Relations department join us. They provided valuable insights into the most commonly reported cases of violence in the area, noting that sexual and physical violence remain the most prevalent. Their contribution emphasized the urgent need for community collaboration in prevention and response efforts.
Parents and guardians responded positively to the feedback and demonstrated a willingness to learn and take action. They also gained a clearer understanding of digital violence, which aligned with this year’s theme, reinforcing the importance of protecting girls both offline and online. It was our privilege to have Werner Blatter listen in to the issues and concerns raised during this event as well.
